Water Pollution Due to Underground Storage Leakage
BY: BRAYDEN HOWELL
The Problem
Have you ever seen a candy wrapper on the ground? If so what did you do with it? What you should have done was, pick it up and think, could this be useful to me or should I recycle it? Because if you don't choose one of those options this is what will happen. First, it will just lay there while people walk on it. Because people's shoe bottoms are dirty, the chemicals and pesticides on the bottom of their shoes get all over the’’ little harmless piece of trash.’’ The reason this is happening is, people put fertilizers and pesticides in their yard, so when people walk on the grass the chemicals get all over their shoes. The scientific word for that topic is, eutrophication. After that the trash will wait there until it rains. And the whole time it just keeps getting dirtier and dirtier. By now it's too late to throw it away or use it. The reason for this is, the chemicals are on it so if you use it for something you'd get sick. You don't want to get sick by contamination because you could die.
Once it rains because the trash is light weighted the rain will carry it away and the rain travels down that little stream of rain. While picking up even more chemicals from more people's yards making the rain more acid than ever. So that makes it called acid rain instead of just rain. After it travels through the mini stream on the side of the road it will reach the sewer. This sewer tank is full of oil, chemicals, pesticides and other not eco friendly substances.
Remember the water is no longer ordinary water, it is acid water. Which makes it more dangerous and contaminated. In the sewer there’s gross and harmful water. This affects the acid rain to because contaminated water can get even more contaminated. And if it is a single human can die if they drink it. The next time it rains the tiny candy wrapper will start to move down the drain. Eventually it will come to a hole in the sewer. The candy wrapper will leak out the hole. Next, the piece of trash will probably end up in a construction site. The people working will see it. They are so determined to build more they make an underground storage tank. The trash leaks out. This is Underground Storage Leakage.
What is Underground Storage Leakage?
Underground storage leakage is when an underground storage tank leaks into the groundwater. First there's a bunch of not eco friendly chemicals and pesticides. Second, a tree's roots can and usually poke holes into the tank making the not eco friendly stuff leak into the aquafire. You can only build a tank a certain amount of length away from a tree. The reason the tanks are underground is because they used up all the land. It's really bad if these tanks leak into the aquifer because most of the water we drink is from the aquifer.
Other Problems
Some other problems are, over 100 people have died because of contaminated water. That means us if we don't stop building storage tanks! It's not the tank it self that can kill it after the tank leak. The water will absorb all of the chemicals and pesticides that's how people have died. It's not just that. Some people that don't have access to water. So they take chances and try to get the liquid out of the storage tank. Because the chemicals and pesticides look like water they drink it. What can happen?
What can happen?
You could get a terrible sickness. You could also be addicted to drinking the chemicals and pesticides. Because you could have no water that is clean. How can we help?
Solutions
We can fix this by first, not having so much chemicals being made. Second, have the tank replaced every year. Third, don’t pollute because everything you do matters. For example: say you're throwing paint into a river in America, and someone's taking a shower in India the paint can be the water there showering in. to go even farther you can. Conserve water by turning off the tap when running water is not necessary. This helps prevent water shortages and reduces the amount of contaminated water that needs treatment.Be careful about what you throw down your sink or toilet. Don’t throw paints, oils or other forms of litter down the drain.
Use environmentally household products, such as washing powder, household cleaning agents and toiletries. Take great care not to overuse pesticides and fertilisers. This will prevent runoffs of the material into nearby water sources. By having more plants in your garden you are preventing fertilizers, pesticides and contaminated water from running off into nearby water sources. What does this all come to?
Main message
The main topic all of this comes to is, Don't pollute It can cause underground storage leakage! And underground storage leakage can cause water pollution. Water pollution can cause illnesses and many more.
Extra: Garbage Island
Garbage island is in the pacific ocean. It's not an island it's a little part of the water in the the pacific ocean. Its called an island because there's so much trash that it looks like an island! This connects to marine dumping. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is one of many areas in the ocean where marine debris naturally concentrates because of ocean currents. In this episode, Dianna Parker from the NOAA Marine Debris Program explains what a garbage patch is and isn't, what we know and don't know, and what we can do about this ocean-sized problem. The Great Pacific garbage patch, also described as the Pacific trash vortex, is a gyre of marine debris particles in the central North Pacific Ocean discovered between 1985 and 1988.
