I chose this topic because many animals are affected by acid rain each year and I love animals.
Water is everywhere. It makes up 70% of earth's water. But only 3% is fresh witch means 67% is salt water. The amount of water we have on earth never changes. So when water goes through the water cycle, we want it to be fresh and not acid. I am going to tell you how Acid Rain impacts water pollution..
What is Acid Rain?
Acid Rain is rain (or sleet or snow) that has become acidic due to pollution. People burning fossil fuels is a major cause of acid rain. Fossil fuel is a oil that you use for your car like gas but more dangerous. Over the years, this pollution in the air has begun to affect rainfall. This acid rain mainly affects lakes and streams. It makes them unsafe.
Acid rain normally forms high up in the clouds when sulfur and nitrogen oxides react with water oxygen and oxidants. This mixture forms a mild solution of sulfuric acid and nitric acid. Over the years sunlight increases the rate of most of these reactions. And we get more acid rain.
Although some rain is acidic, human activities have made it worse. acid rain is not clear. it can be many colors like red yellow and orange sometimes multi colored.
What are some problems from Acid Rain?
Acid rain can cause lots of problems. Acid rain is raining acid so it causes lots of problems. One is acid rain itself its acid it soaks into animals bodys and hurts them. When it gets in water a whole lake could be polluted!
How can we help?
Some ways we can help are not using so much fossil fuels, burning coal more efficiently, and using public transport.
E.P.A’s acid rain program
Power plants generate the power we use everyday unfortunately power plants produce large amounts of nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide when they burn fossil fuels, especially coal,to produce energy. Congress passed a law that said E.P.A should start the acid rain program.
