I chose to study Marine Dumping because, I wanted to find a way to stop it and I wanted to let other people know about Marine Dumping so they could help too. Also, I felt like this topic just spoke to me. One child can make such a change in the world - Emerson
Marine Dumping
By Emerson
SPLASH!! Goes the water. There are boats everywhere dumping trash in the ocean. The waves are crashing around and the smell of that salty water in the air. Think about all the trash that is in the ocean. SWISH!! SWISH!! AHH!! When sea creatures get into all the trash the creature gets stuck or trapped. Could you imagine being trapped in trash? Well, that's what is happening to all the poor animals.
What Is Marine Dumping?
Marine dumping is when people on boats have huge piles of trash and dump it in the ocean. BOOM!! That's the nose it makes when it hits the ocean. Marine Dumping is a big problem because it pollutes.
Dumped Into The Ocean
Sometimes, people on big boats dump trash into the ocean. Other times, trash dropped on the ground gets carried into the ocean by the wind, rain or the river. Garbage dumped on the ground can get carried to the rivers and rivers eventually get to the ocean. There’s so much trash there is an island named Garbage Island.
From Stream To Ocean
Sometimes a person might drop/dump trash, chemicals, or sometimes even paint into a small stream. The stream then flows into a larger river, bringing the pollution with it. Once the pollution is in a river it will eventually be carried out to the sea. Then the trash, chemicals, or the paint will be at sea. For example, if a creek is near and someone throws trash in it, then it would go to the ocean.
Chemical Marine Dumping
Chemicals are another type of pollution that can harm rivers, lakes, ocean, and other water sources. Sometimes, factories dump chemicals in water sources, such as corlene. If animals swallowed this polluted water, they would be poisoned.
Why Is Marine Dumping A Problem?
Marine Dumping is very dangerous to people, animals and plants that are near or not near lakes, oceans, rivers and other water sources. Also if plastic bags or fishing nets get into the water then that sea creature would probably die. So, if you see any trash pick it up, but use something that is not your hands, like a plastic bag, or gloves that have not been used.
How Can I Help?
If you see someone pouring out garbage or chemicals into the ocean, then contact the EPA. If you visit a river, beach or a lake throw all of your trash away. Also, never leave trash outside because, it can be blown into a water source by the wind. By being careful with your trash, you’ll be saving and protecting people, animals and plants from dying in the future. That's how you can help. So follow the rules and save your community from Marine Dumping. We are One Well.
