I chose these topic because at first I had no Idea what urban development was so I wanted to learn what it was about.
Urban Development
By: Isaiah
What is urban development?
Imagine living in a world without urban development. Every city would be gone. No buildings around you and no houses to live in. In urban and suburban areas, much of the land is covered by buildings and pavement. Urban development is necessary and it is not a bad thing, but it can be if it is not managed properly because urban areas have a lot of ways to pollute water.
How does urban development cause water pollution?
Runoff from barnyards, feedlots, and cropland carry away manure, fertilizers, ammonia, pesticides, livestock, waste, oil, and toxins from farm equipment, soil, and sediment. Runoff from factories let chemicals into rivers. Streets carry oil, rubber, heavy metals, and other contaminants and poison rivers. When industries and cities are built, the natural Watershed is changed. So basically what's happening is when there are buildings water can’t get to the ground because it can’t get through impervious surfaces (im-per-vi-ous) so more grass can’t grow.
What can we do to stop water pollution caused by urban development?
When designing our cities, we should make more green spaces. We should also make less buildings so more grass can grow. For example: New York has barely any grass because there are too many buildings so less grass can grow. But Hawaii has lots of grass because there are less houses and more grass. Urban development in Atlanta is harmful but not as much as it is in New York. In conclusion, I hope you learned something you did not know about water pollution and urban development and you should contact the EPA if a city is polluting.
