A big highlight our learning expedition was exploring musical theater and creative expression with local dance artist, Ericka Shannon thanks to a generous grant from DEF/Zara's Fund. Ms. Shannon worked with third graders on choreographing an original performance to share the message of "One Well." It was so much fun exploring creative outlets for sharing our message of water pollution through dance, movement, verse, and song. The four part performance, outlined below, truly captured the meaning of our third grade learning expedition.
SECTION ONE:
Earth, Air, Fire, Water. All four come together, but the greatest of all is water. From water flows life and without it, nothing can survive. Our planet spins, or planet gives life, and our planet depends on water to support every living organism. Without water, nothing can survive.
SECTION TWO:
Welcome little drops. Come together, large and small, equal in all. One million tiny droplets needed for just one raindrop. Beautiful dance, connected from the start. The water today is the same from yesterday, the water never changes as it cycles now as in the beginning. Humans create, humans destroy-their impact left. SILENCE. LISTEN. LISTEN NOW.
SECTION THREE:
We take, we consume, we build and we use more than we need. We push back our water, our precious life source. "There is no more water now than there was 100 or 1000 or even 10,000 years ago. And there will be no more 100 years from now, when the population may be closer to 10 billion." Find balance. Find peace. "Our actions from our waste may be overloading water's natural ability to clean itself." STOP. LISTEN. LISTEN NOW. "The effects of pollution can be stopped and quite possibly reversed, but we must reduce the amount of pollution that gets into our water." The time must be NOW!
SECTION FOUR:
"Water has the power to change everything. A single splash can sprout a seed, quench a thirst, provide a habitat, generate energy and sustain life. It also has the power to unite-or divide-the world. Water is the most basic and important need of all life on Earth... Taking actions to conserve water can help save the well. Conserving the water means protecting both the quantity and quality of water on Earth." Come together now and be one. Be the Well CONNECTED. Be the Well CHANGED. Be the Well KIND. Be the Well AWARE. Be ONE WELL.
