I chose global warming because I thought it would be interesting to learn why global warming pollutes water. I already knew a lot about global warming and I was worried about some of the animals. That is why I chose global warming.
Global Warming and Water Pollution
By Charlotte
One day, you wake up and you are really happy. You get to go to the beach! At the beach, you see a dead dolphin. It’s hotter than usual at the beach. You realize the dolphin died because of global warming! You might think that global warming, also known as climate change, is the only type of pollution that pollutes water, but that’s not true. There are lots of pollution types, but this paper is focusing on global warming.
Some people use chemicals such as pesticides or fertilizers. When it rains, all those chemicals wash down into bodies of water. Global warming can cause violent storms, which causes more chemicals to get washed down into rivers, lakes, and streams, and maybe even into the ocean. We also drink water, and if it is polluted, we may die. In 1972, the Cuyahoga (cu yuh HO-ga) river in Ohio caught on fire 13 times because of water pollution! People decided to make a law called the Clean Water Act because of all the pollution.
Although greenhouse gases cause violent storms such as hurricanes and flooding, it can also cause droughts. Droughts are bad because it means that there is no rain and people can die because of water shortage. Global warming is caused by too many greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases get their name from being warm, like a greenhouse needs to be in order for tropical plants to survive. When you burn fossil fuels, they get into the air. Cars, trucks, and other vehicles cause greenhouse gases, too. Greenhouse gases are made from natural things like carbon dioxide, and even water vapor. People use fossil fuels because it is easy. It makes electricity and it is inexpensive.
Greenhouse gases are in the air. When the sun’s rays go through them, water on Earth absorbs the rays. Energy from the Earth then goes through the gases out of our atmosphere, but most of it stays on Earth because the greenhouse gases are too thick. This warms the Earth.
Lots of water sources that are frozen like glacier sheets and icebergs are melting because of global warming. The animals that live in snowy places like polar bears have adapted to cold weather. Global warming is warming up the Earth. This makes the animal’s lives harder to survive as colder places warm up. Mostly aquatic animals, aquatic plants, and coral reefs are affected, but other animals and plants are, too. They are affected because global warming can cause different bodies of water to dry up. If it happens too much, then even the ocean could possibly dry up. Now imagine you are swimming in a lake. You love the lake so much. Three years later, you go to the lake and it is all dried up! This might give you a picture of global warming.
People can help lower global warming. Here are some things you can do. We can stop burning fossil fuels. People could use more solar panels. Wind turbines can reduce global warming, too. So can water power, such as water mills. If you use less gas, that would help. Instead of driving places, you could walk or bike. Also, if you cannot walk places, carpool, ride a bus, train, or an airplane. These are good choices, too, because people ride together and use less gas than if each person were riding in their own car. During the day, the sunlight is bright. So, instead of using your lights, you can open your blinds and let light run through. That way you can still see, and you don’t waste energy. Do you watch a lot of TV? Well, instead you can play outside, read, or draw. These are good activities and they don’t waste electricity. Also, garbage can get into our water. So, when you go shopping, GET STUFF WITHOUT THE PACKAGING!!! When you get tomatoes, for example, then get the ones without the plastic. The less plastic you use, the less gets into our water source. In conclusion, water is becoming (and much already is) polluted, but we can do things to help.
