I chose to research marine dumping because it sounded really interesting and I like the ocean.
Marine Dumping
By: Thelma
Imagine that you're going to the beach. When you get there you see that the water is black and oily. Dead fish and trash instead of seaweed is on the shore. What if all of the world looked like this? Sometimes people who have boats dump their garbage into the water. Even if it is dumped into a stream or creek it will eventually make its way to the ocean. Dumping trash into the ocean is called marine dumping. So much trash is dumped that there is a place called Garbage Island. If you look at the water, all you see is trash and the land looks the same too. Trash is not the only type of pollution, also oils and radioactive waste. Animals who think the garbage is food may eat it and die. If animals drink the water and it has oil the animal will die too. People and animals need water.
How To Help
You can pick up trash so the wind or rain does not wash it into the water. You can tell more powerful people not to let their city dump trash into the ocean because it harms the environment. If you see somebody dropping trash into the water you can tell them to stop throwing trash into the water. You could also write a letter to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) to tell them what is going on.
