I chose Leakage of Landfills because I thought it would be nice to have a topic about something I am interested in.
Leakage of Landfills
By: Sofia Satterfield
Introduction
CRUNCH! Ew!. There's trash in the ocean. Aw man our trips ruined! There's trash in the ocean. What's that coming from? Well, landfill leakage. Leakage of landfills Is ween garbage overflows from landfills. A landfill is not a dump. A Dump is a hole in the ground where you put trash. A dump is safer because it is deep and is more likely not to leak. But it affects groundwater. The purpose of a landfill is to isolate it from the water. But that doesn't always work. You sit and wonder what’s wrong? Why do people throw away so much trash? Many thoughts wonder in your head? You can’t stop thinking about it. But the number one question… Why?
What Causes Leakage of Landfills?
Some causes of leakage of landfills are people throwing away so much trash that landfills overflow and get into the ocean. Another cause of leakage of landfills Is Substances being non-biodegradable. Non-biodegradable means a substance cannot decompose correctly. So therefore it was sit and rot in the landfill. We can stop this by composting. Or using the 3 r's (reusing reducing and recycling). If we do not stop wasting water where will we go? What's left for us?
What are some of the Effects of Leakage of Landfills?
Effects of landfill leakage are people or animals being harmed of pour water. Another effect of landfill leakage is the food chain being disrupted by starting with shellfish and on through the food chain. The food chain is an important part of the human life cycle because we need food to survive. Not only a small animal might have drank contaminated water. Some recyclable material is band from landfills because the amount of material in landfills is to large. Some recyclable materials are aluminum cans, glass bottles, newspapers, blend paper, and corrugated cardboard.
What are some problems of Leakage of Landfills
Some problems of leakage of landfills are that harmful substances could leak into the ocean and harm people or animals. Some other problems of leakage of landfills are that in some places people are selling trash bags that are too expensive. So therefore people cannot get trash bags to make sure that they're trash does not leak out. Another problem of leakage of landfills is that there are more landfills than dumps but dumps are dangerous to because it can affect groundwater and contaminate it. groundwater goes to the ocean so that could contaminated water could go to the ocean. There are million of tons of plastic in the ocean. To be specific there are 5.2 trillion pieces of plastic in the ocean. The mass of plastic has continued to grow over the last 60 years.
What are some Solutions of Leakage of Landfills
Some solutions of leakage of landfills are Reusing reducing and recycling. Some other solutions of leakage of landfills is composting. composting is when you have a barrel and you put dirt into it and you throw healthy substances into it to decompose. You can also volunteer to pick up trash by the ocean or trash just in general. Another few solutions are monitoring groundwater by being tested for leachate chemicals and making sure landfills are in a safe habitat so they cannot harm animals, plants, or other natural resource
Other facts of Leakage of Landfills
Some other facts of leakage of landfills is there is storm drainage to make it less likely that landfills fill up with water and leak out into the ocean and pollute the water. Garbage can rise from storm water and leak into the ocean. Storm drainage pipes are underground. This is why we need storm drainage pipes. There is a type of slug called a wax worm that eats plastic. It also takes plastic over 400 years to degrade.
Conclusion
CRUNCH! Aw man not again. Well, atleast I know how to clean it up this time. Leakage of landfills is a serious problem. Now you know how to prevent this from happening.
