I chose this chemical fertilizers and pesticides because this topic sounded very interesting and very and I really want to help and stop chemical fertilizers and pesticides from going into the water.
CHEMICAL FERTILIZERS AND PESTICIDES
BY:SAGE CHATHAM-STEPHENS
Swish Swish Swish, imagine you're a fish swimming through the river happily. Then you come to a part of the river that was dirty, mucky and has a LOT of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in the water! You gasp for oxygen... and take your last breath! What could of killed you? It was the chemical fertilizers and pesticides that were in the water.
Too many chemical fertilizers and pesticides are getting into the water and people are getting worried because the water is getting polluted and people are getting sick and dying. Since so many people don’t know what happens when we pollute and when we put chemical fertilizers and pesticides in the water.
WHAT’S THE PROBLEM?
If you use too much fertilizer or apply it at the wrong time it can easily wash off your lawn and then flow untreated into lakes and streams. When excess nutrients from all the fertilizer we use runs of into our waterways they can cause algae blooms sometimes big enough to make waterways impassable. Too many nutrients in the water can cause algae to to grow which uses up the oxygen in the water. Low levels of oxygen can hurt aquatic life and even lead to fish kills and fish deaths When algae die they sink to the bottom and remove in a process that removes oxygen from the water. Fish and these other aquatic species can’t live in these so-called “dead zones” so they die or move on to greener underwater pastures. The use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides has been linked to a number of environmental problems and issues. The chemicals in these fertilizer and pesticides have been linked to the severe decline in the honeybee population the increase cancerous tumors in wild animals and poisoning to fish. The effects of these chemicals on the environment are being felt around the world and are affecting the balance of nature.
WHAT CAN WE DO?
We can write to important people and spread the word. We can also try to pick up as much trash as we can and pick up belongings, recyclable things, etc; Also, whenever we go to a water body if the water body has a lot of algae we can try to pick up as much algae as possible in that body of water. Also we can put up posters saying what will happen if we put chemical fertilizers and pesticides in the water or they go into the water by themselves. Last but not least we can call family members and tell them what happens when we pollute and when we put chemical fertilizers and pesticides in the water.
