I chose this topic to research because it is different then all the other topics. It was different because all the other topics were like chemicals, trash and other things this was more like a combination of all of them.
Urban Development and Water Pollution
By Owen Peters
Did you know that the salt that you put on your driveway to melt snow could end up in someone else's water, or someone else's salt could end up in your water? Would you care? How would you feel? Read on to find out more about urban development. Which is basically the development of urban cities.
One of the problems with urban is deforestation to build cities. If the tree cut down is near a water source, since the tree’s roots is what holds the dirt in place the dirt might erode into the water. Eroding dirt can carry harmful chemicals such as oil, grease, and heavy metals. The heavy metals are often lead, cadmium, copper, molybdenum, nickel, vanadium and chromium. If this happens no doubt it will pollute the water.
Another problem is overpopulation. Overpopulation is when more people are born than the people who are dying. It's a problem because the more people who are born, the more resources we need. Factories use more water to cool down the machines that they use to make resources. Then they release the heated water, back into their source of water which will kill the animals in the water source. Our water could also become polluted because there are so many people needing water that the treatment plant won’t have time to clean the water.
The next problem is urban runoff. Urban runoff is chemicals are from developed urbanized cities. The runoff from backyards is most commonly fertilizers, pesticides and mosquito spray. Runoff from factories is most commonly oil, used chemicals, sewage and cafeteria waste. Runoff from streets is often wrappers and salt.
Now onto what is being done. There are many ordinances. The Bunker Ordinance protects the first 25 ft next to the water source feet from pipelines, 50 ft from buildings and 75 ft from concrete. Unfortunately, this ordinance is only for the United States of America. The Tree Protection Ordinance sets strict limits on how many trees you’re able to remove. Unfortunately, this ordinance is only for Atlanta. The storm water Management Ordinance manages the amount of storm water that goes straight to creeks and rivers. The Erosion Control Ordinance makes sure all construction has firm ground and a fence. The Illicit Discharge Ordinance was made to regulate the pollution that was being discharged into creeks and other water sources.
Now on to what you can do. You can help by picking up trash. You should think about becoming environmental activist or conservationist. Instead of riding in your parent's car try carpooling or riding school bus. You can also tell your parents to get an electric car. There are many other ways to help to. Also, try and use eco-friendly products (like Seventh Generation).
To conclude, we are polluting a lot of our water. But there are a lot of things that you can do. There are also lots of things being done too. So with that said, please protect the environment. Oh, also share this with your friends, pleas
