I chose my topic because I wanted to learn more about nuclear waste (also known as radioactive waste).
Water Pollution and Nuclear Waste By Jessica Zion
Did you know that Japan might be planning to dump more than 900,000 tons of nuclear waste into the ocean?! This may not seem like much, but, what if it reaches our water?! What if your friends and family die because of it?!
Nuclear waste is very bad for the environment. It can cause cancer and birth defects. The amount of nuclear waste is getting higher. Nuclear waste can include tools used in nuclear power plants, suits used to protect power plant workers from the nuclear things and just plain nuclear waste. Nuclear power plants also discharge a different type of pollution. Nuclear power plants have hot radioactive rods. When the rods are made they take ten years to cool down so the power plant gets a lot of cold water to cool the rods down. The water usually is from nearby rivers and lakes! When the water comes out of the factories after it is used, it’s usually warm and contains heavy metals and salts. The fish aren’t used to the warm water and the salt and metal are like toxic poison to them, and since the water is so warm some fish or plants die. The nuclear waste can cause pollution if not properly managed.
Why is Japan planning to dump all this nuclear waste? Honestly, I don’t know. Maybe they had too much nuclear waste. They haven’t dumped it yet, but sources say they are planning to. They might not dump the nuclear waste though.
The Clean Water Act should make more laws about what nuclear plants can do, and nuclear power plants should use filters to make the water safe before it gets put back in rivers, lakes, and oceans. You should help stop water pollution because polluted water might end up in your water supply. Here are some things you can do to prevent water pollution. You can use eco-friendly cleaners instead of harsh chemicals, not pour oil down the drain, and clean up trash around water. You can also write letters to power plants or factories about the Clean Water Act and ask if they are following the law. There are some really gross disgusting things you can find in polluted water. The Clean Water Act is a law to help protect water. I think you should help protect water so that our water says clean and safe.
