When I chose Marine Dumping, it all started when Mrs. Foster had given us an article that told about all of the types of water pollution, and I wanted animal waste. But then, at the last second, I decided I wanted Marine Dumping, and I read that Marine Dumping was when Humans dump trash into the ocean. When we started researching, I knew it was a good choice.
Marine Dumping

SPLASH!!!! Goes the trash as it plummets into the water. People are dumping their trash into the ocean, not knowing what it does, or maybe, they do know but they don’t care. If you know about Marine Dumping, maybe you can help!
What is Marine Dumping?
Floating ocean trash tends to gather up at the center of a vortex and on coastlines. The meaning of ocean dumping refers to the dumping of garbage, sewage, waste chemicals, and construction debris into the ocean. Ocean pollution, also known as marine pollution, is the spreading of harmful substances such as oil, plastic, industrial and agricultural waste and chemical particles into the ocean. Non-controlled disposal of wastes and other materials into the ocean breaks apart marine and natural resources and also poses human health risks. It harms mammals that live in the ocean because animals such as whales and seals need to come to the water’s surface to breathe air. Sometimes, these animals get trapped underwater in old nets and ropes. When this happens, they can’t breathe, and they drown. Big companies sometimes just dump the stuff they don’t want into oceans or rivers, and sometimes people dump radioactive waste into the water!
As oils, plastic, and different chemicals get dumped into the ocean, animals that live in it may die if they swallow the trash. Sometimes, people on boats dump things like old ropes or torn fishing nets in the oceans. Factories may also dump chemicals into rivers. Then, the rivers carry the chemicals out to sea.
Sometimes, people dump trash directly into the water from a boat, or sometimes, they just throw trash on the ground and the wind carries it into the ocean. Factories dump chemicals such as those used to make paint and glue into rivers, and the rivers lead to oceans. Also, people pour oil and harmful chemicals down storm drains. These poisonous liquids can end up in streams, rivers, and lakes. Oil is another type of pollution that is very harmful to oceans. If a ship that is carrying oil has an accident, oil can leak from the damaged ship. Marine dumping can harm people too, for example, if we dump trash into a water source that we drink, like the Chattahoochee River, we will drink that water and get sick.
Why is the Problem Happening?
Sometimes, people don’t know that trash will hurt the water. Also, when people throw trash on the ground and when it gets carried into the ocean, it will lead to something called a garbage patch. Garbage patches are parts of the ocean where floating trash gathers together. Another way that trash can harm water is that if you throw trash on the beach, ocean waves will carry the trash into the water.
What can be done/Has been done to fix the problem?
For nearly forty-five years, EPA’s (The Environmental Protection Agency’s) Ocean Dumping Management Program has stopped many harmful materials from being Ocean Dumped. As Human Beings, we can stop littering, so that the wind doesn’t carry trash into the ocean. We can also stop directly throwing things into the ocean. There are so many things that we can do, so please start doing those things now.
