Oil spills
by hayden.w
It’s a peaceful day at the beach then Boom! A ship had a crash. Oil spills out and plunges into the water turning it from clearwater to black water. Most of the animals in the ocean are getting very sick. People in suits are rushing down to help clean up the ocean, the oil, and help the sick animals.
Why do people and animals need water?
We use water every day. Without water we can not brush our teeth and our teeth would fall out . We all need water to cook our food. We also need water to drink. Animals also need water to drink so that they can live. Some animals even live in water so it is very important to them.
And if they have babies and oil gets into the water the babies will die. Without water there would be no living things on the planet.
What is an oil spill?
An oil spill happens when people dump oil or a ship crashes and oil leaks out. Oil also gets spilled when airplanes, cars, or trains leak out oil and it rains and washes it into the water.
The problem with oil spills is that ocean animals that swallow oil can get sick and die. Some ocean animals have been killed by people dumping oil into the ocean. Ocean animals can also die because its food has been killed by oil. If oil gets in a hippos water and it drinks the water it will get sick or die. If oil gets in the water that the hippos are bathing in, they will have to get out of their bathing water. If they are out of the water too long, then their skin will get dry and crack.
An oil spill has killed about 82,000 birds of 102 species, approximately 6,165 sea turtles, and up to 25,900 marine animals. Since most oils float the creatures most affected by oil are sea otters and sea birds that are found near sea surface or shorelines. If oil comes ashore sea birds can be harmed or killed. Even if a marine mammal escapes, the immediate effect of an oil spill can damage their food source like fish and bacteria. The birds most affected by oil spills are the ones that spends their time near the sea or the water such as gulls, pelicans, akus, terms, and loons.
Imagine drinking oil. That would make you very sick. If anyone drinks oil they would get sick or die. Imagine putting your food in oil to cook it.
What we can do to prevent oil spills?
To prevent oil spills, use less oil so less oil has to be transported. You should not dump oil into the water because a creek in Ohio caught on fire 13 times because they were dumping oil into the creek. That is why you should not dump oil into any source of water. You should not dump oil because it is bad for the environment and it can kill animals. If you see a oil spill you should tell a adult. If you are changing the oil in a train or a car then you should change the oil away from water. If you poulet you are killing types of yummy fish like salmon and lots others.
Oil can kill animals and humans so please stop polluting.
